RAJ YOGA IN DETAIL

While life on earth is threatened by serious problems like global warming, war-mongering, terrorism, unbridled greed, cruelty, apathy, stress and tension, Raja yoga holds the key to their solution. At this point of crisis, science and technology, though immensely helpful in generating comfort, ease and efficiency in the external ambience of day to day life, they have failed to change people’s thought for the better. Hence the relevance of Raja Yoga, for it can mould, kindle and elevate our thought. The Raja Yogic discipline of self-control, self-purification, meditation, breath-control and rising beyond space-time in Samadhi has the possibility of transforming the world scenario, humanizing all human beings in the true sense, and conducting them on the path of divinity. The dream of Ashish is to disseminate the teaching of Raja Yoga-cum-Nada Yoga in order to prepare the human race for creating heaven on earth. Heaven, however, is not the ultimate goal of life, but when heavenly peace and harmony are established on earth, human beings would be lifted by Yoga from that take-off ground even beyond heaven, to total beatitude, Kaivalya, life’s ultimate goal.

With the help of science and technology, we should have found heaven on earth, but on account of sheer lack of wisdom, man today is nearer to hell. If we were really wise, we would not divide the earth in the name of caste, creed, and so on, nor destroy one another, nor exploit nature thoughtlessly. Our contemporary technology thrives upon maximum exploitation of nature and society. People are both physically as well as psychologically exploited in order to make technology prosper. We are constantly engaged in destroying this earth even without being aware of it. Raja Yoga, on the other hand, kindles all the physical and psychic faculties and cultivates pure, unalloyed love, which, in its turn, generates pure, unalloyed, wisdom. With the help of Raja Yoga, man’s creative faculty attains to maximum development and it puts an end to his destructive tendency. Raja Yoga may removes the barriers of misunderstanding and hatred in this fragmented world, and when love and not hate reigns supreme, it will solve all problems of this planet.

Although apparently it it is not wrong if we use science and technology for providing society with more comfort, yet if the goal of our endeavors is selfish enjoyment, fragmentation and disharmony are bound to be the result. Our mind is fragmented and conditioned, and this is the problem encountered in every division today. We are wasting lots of energy and currency in futile pursuits. Raja Yoga teaches us how to channel our energy properly for getting maximum results, so that our efforts do not go in vain. Raja Yoga not only controls and purifies thought but also kindles all dormant powers of the brain so that it may work with maximum efficiency. Although the ascent of the soul on its spiritual journey has to go beyond the level of thought, yet thought is the ground for the further take-off, and the ground is to be prepared first.

Of all the various kinds of Yoga, Raja Yoga is the most efficacious, most holistic, and also most suitable for the people of our time. Although Bhakti Yoga is much extolled as the easiest and shortest approach to divinity, for it may not always prove so. First, since it is the most personal, intimate approach to God, there are few objective criteria to judge its genuineness in the present age of hollow showmanship. Secondly, one may judge oneself wrongly, if no objective self-assessment is applied. Jnana Yoga, too, is highly acclaimed, yet an exclusive pursuit of knowledge without the elements of action and feeling may make one conceited, self-opinionated, and callous. Hatha Yoga shares the disciplines of Yogic postures, breathing exercise, trataka, etc., with Raja Yoga, but it does not take one beyond disciplining the body. Hatha Yoga techniques can arrest time, but cannot go beyond the limits of space. Only Raja Yoga is capable of taking one beyond time-space. Raja Yoga, indeed, is the all-inclusive Yoga that recognizes and combines the salient features of Jnana Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, and Hatha Yoga. Laya Yoga or Nada Yoga, allied to Mantra Yoga, may also be practiced as a branch affiliated to the Samyama or the last three stages of Raja Yoga, namely Dharana, Dhyana and Samadhi. This justifies the name, Raja Yoga, the king of all kinds of Yoga.
